Forty Days After Easter

Again, there is some possibility for confusion here, but (again – and with one slight caveat) the wording of the question allows only one correct answer.

You could be forgiven for answering "Whitsun", which is an alternative English name for Pentecost. This is the seventh Sunday after Easter – which, as readers of this website will not need pointing out, is 49 days after Easter (and not 40).

Another source of confusion is the Feast of the Assumption, which is the day that the Virgin Mary was taken up into Heaven. This is celebrated on 15 August – and is not directly connected with Easter.

Ascension Day (as readers of this website, again, should not need reminding) is the day on which Jesus Christ was taken up into Heaven. It's celebrated on the fortieth day of Easter.

You may notice the subtle difference between that last sentence and the wording of the question, which brings me to the caveat that I mentioned earlier. Ascension Day is not forty days after Easter; being "the fortieth day of Easter", it's actually thirty–nine days after Easter Day.

As Easter Day is a Sunday (also known, erroneously IMHO, as Easter Sunday), Ascension Day is always a Thursday.
